The days have been very busy. Sunday we worshipped with Gulu Community Church, our host church. We enjoyed their worship and they sang their songs in English so that was enjoyable and kind of them. Each team member was able to share a verse and a word of encouragement. I was then able to preach a sermon about being Salt and Light with translation of course. That day I spent time with Pastor George and many of the young leaders discussing bible, leadership development and answering specific bible questions. The day for me ended with reconciling two pastors who had different personalities and expectations when they had worked together previously. That was a joy. Two other team members escorted one of the single moms to the market to gather items to begin a business. Two others went with one of the church moms to visit her 10-year old in a local boarding school. Education is unique here and costs each family. Driving between the villages a school literally exists just about every couple of kilometers. The fees for some kids are as little as $10-15 per semester. We discussed sponsoring some children through our host church so 100% of the funds would go to the child and the church leadership could provide accountability. Details need to be worked out. Other opportunities are to provide start up money for some of the men in the church to start businesses. $80 would start a farm for a person that already has land.

The devotion of the Ugandans is very sincere and very deep. Many of them rise at 4am to study and pray until 6am. They begin work at 7am and often work until sundown. We attempted to keep up with them in the field working to clear the ground in Pagik [pa—geek] for a new church building. It was 100 plus degrees in the shade and we drank all of our water that day. It was not difficult to overheat and dehydrate. Many of the villages have a few Christians so they gather them under a clove of trees for church. Then when possible, they construct a church building that also doubles as a school. On the church property will go the borehole providing clean water with a hand pump. By working with this strategy the church quickly becomes the center of the village and surrounding regions. The journey to Pagik was an adventure. Any of the roads typically is as cars, bikes, motorcycles, animals, and people walking all share the road. On top of that, the UN and World Vision cars drive very fast creating adventures as everyone swerves to miss potholes or bumps. For the last few kilometers to Pagik we essentially travelled on two footpaths in our hired van. That means we made our own road. We spent Monday and Tuesday in Pagik. Monday evening the rains were ahead of us making our hour and fifteen minute commute more like two and half hours of serious bumps!!! We ate, went to bed, and were up early the next morning heading back out. After working in Pagik Tuesday, we were able to pass out a lot of the clothes and toys we had brought with us. And then after conversations revealed that some of the boys ranging in age from 15-18 wanted to be baptized. So we went to the cold stream that had a pool just large enough to baptize. Pastor George asked them each if they knew Jesus personally and one boy said no, but he wanted to. So he stepped forward, lifted his arms to the surrender position and knelt down to receive Jesus. We were then able to baptize the five of them. This was a spontaneous blessing the Lord gave us as we had not expected such a blessing. That night our whole team gathered over at Pastor George’s with many of the young male leaders in the church. The ladies on our team were excited when one of the female leaders showed up to support the female gender. We shared final words over this “last supper” together. Our hearts truly overflowed with humility and gratefulness as testimonies were shared of how the Lord had used us in ministry and in the lives of these people. After saying good bye, we headed to our last night at the Acholi Inn. Here are two pics to contrast. Chest high grass where the church building is to go, and then the next stage after cutting it down. Calling this yard work is a joke. This incredibly difficult to do as the hoe ways at least 10-15lbs.

The next day we gave school supplies one of the local schools and then headed for Serotti, which was about 5 hours away. We visited some children who were part of Children’s Hope Chest sponsorship program. We visited them and after hearing them sing and sharing a snack, we went to visit one of them in the hospital. The hospitals in Uganda are a much longer story, but it was difficult to consider that in the villages one’s chances for survival existed in this type of facility. We spent the night in Serotti in the children’s hope chest house, which allowed us to begin decompressing from some very, very intense days previously. Finding a guitar in one of the closets, we shared a bit of singing and worship with one of the social workers from Children’s Hope Chest. The next morning we attempted to visit another sponsorship center. Due to some confusing we ended up driving an hour and having to turn around to gather our things and head west. When I say head west, we were on the eastern side of Uganda so about five hours found us on the banks of the Nile River for a little fun before a five hour drive Saturday morning, a day in Kampala, and then on to Entebbe to fly home.

Let me say that your prayers have been visible and sustaining every step of the way. Even now as I type I’m humbled to consider all that the Lord has done to us and through us these past weeks. You can be sure that people here know of the works of Christ and you have been a part of it. Cynthia and I joked that the Outpost provided 40% of the mission team with Cherry Hills the other 60%. My heart is that each of you may be blessed these days you walk with Christ. Secondly, that your heart may grow towards winning others to Jesus. And finally, that you too may join the ministry of Gulu Community Church soon to bring encouragement and further the kingdom here as well as at home. We all cannot thank you enough for your support and prayers, may you walk closely with Jesus today.

One more thing, drop box has been challenging due to internet speeds and availability. Last night it was topping out at 7KB per second. Yours at home is most likely 10MB per second. Due the math:0

Storms continue to come here weather wise in Uganda, but only in the evenings. Today we had a great taste of what those rains do on the dirt roads in the bush. At one point I thought we might be pushing, but we made it. We travelled to the region of Tegote today and specifically the village of sp? Kucheckay. Met with the church and the ladies did a few songs for the kids and I preached a sermon. Here in Uganda one typically has 15 min or less to know they are going to preach sometimes….but that is what we are here for so we stay ready. We then travelled to see another church in a village that I cannot remember the name. We came back some for naps and some for an excursion to the market. I had a standing meeting to speak to the medical student fellowship here in GULU. All of their worship songs were in English and they all understood it very well so it was a breath of fresh air. I challenged them as those God by God and blessed by the government to go to school to study medicine to be diligent and serve God while they do their studies. I challenged them to think beyond GULU, beyond Uganda, and even the African continent and consider a vision to change the world. We had a great rapport and great time together. It was really an inspiring time and I enjoyed it immensely. I considered it a great privilege to speak to this specific group. what a blessing they were. Tomorrow we’ll be at Gulu Community Church with our host pastor, Pastor George Jubilani at his church. We’ll be present for two services and I’ll get to preach in each of the services. Cynthia and I are praying for Chris Cheline as he teaches the Outpost and I am grateful for Brett’s teaching of last week. Grateful to have people step up and teach. Pray the Lord is richly blessing your life and you are doing all you can to walk with him. For the praise of his glory……

Today the team went to one of the villages to lead a VBS as I stayed in the city of Gulu to complete the pastor’s conference. They were in the village of Kidikal. They were told that Kidikal was one of the hardest hit back in the days of the war with the LRA [Lord's Resistant Army]. Kony is the leader of the LRA who terrorized the area of Northern Uganda resulting in the Invisible Children video. Gulu was the city of refuge all of the kids would walk to. A great deal of witchcraft was in Gulu up until 6 years ago we are told. The pastors have said when they began to join together to pray, Kony and the war moved away. Today as we wrapped up the conference I could not help but get emotional. The ground we were able to cover and the diligence these pastors showed to get through the week in high temperatures was incredible. They understand God’s plan for the church through Paul [Eph 3:8-10], the importance of sound doctrine, and multiplying leaders. ITs hard to believe that the conference is over! It feels a little sad knowing that I won’t get to see these pastors for some time, if ever. On the other hand, having an evening to watch the European soccer and catch up on emails is nice. If you have logged on to dropbox be aware that the upload speed of the internet fluctuates between a whopping 8.6Kbs and 26Kbs. That is kilobytes per second and most of you have Mbs which is a lot faster. Again, the mindset of the poverty here is debilitating and overwhelming. The village where the church is has many who struggle to have enough to eat. Some struggle to clothe their children and many kids have no shoes. Still their joy for Christ is truly incredible. If I could get the video to upload from today, you would see what I mean. The expression, the singing, the dancing in church clothes and high temperatures was pretty incredible. I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to give these pastors a good start on their theological education. Last night we showed the Jesus film in town…you know the one with all the whitey males and prozac Jesus? It was helpful that the english was overdubbed with Acholi which is the local language of the people. Showing a movie in the church brought well over 500 adults and children. With the culture being what it is, they have to pause the movie with Jesus on the cross and present the gospel. They asked me to do it so I did so and was grateful to have had that experience. The children cheered very loudly every time…every single time Jesus came into the picture. And then, after presenting the gospel and talking about the cross and having about 70 people say they were trusting Christ, we turned the movie on and proceeded to watch the end. When Jesus resurrected, the screams were piercing! I even took some video which will be loaded in about a year of how loud it was. Such joy in poverty is life-shaping. As I’ve reflected on our country over the past week in light of these pastors and their sacrifices I realize the work we have to do. Working through the Pauline plan for church planting and the core teachings of the gospel gave me encouragement that if we take our time and lay good foundations, we can make missional churches in America that will withstand the tests of the culture. The process is slow and not very popular. But it is God’s way that he worked through Paul to reveal in Eph 3:8-10. Every disciple is called to make disciples. So with one of the questions I ended the conference with, I will leave you with. If Jesus has called us to make disciples, and that means every person knowing him, than are you discipling??? Asking you to continue to pray for us. Much has been accomplished and more to do. Blessings!

Did not escape the illness here in Uganda. So Monday was pretty rough with an upset stomach and teaching all day. But the Lord was kind and helped me through. An often question asked here is, “How can we be pastors if we do not go to theological school? Thanks to Antioch School, I’m able to say, “This is theology school we are giving you today!!!” We have been working hard at giving these 130 or so pastors a solid foundation so they can further their discipleship when the return home. I have been working with them to get their mind around communal learning and a learning process. It has been 3 very fruitful days for us all so that feels great. The translators have made it very easy and many of the people do quite well with English too. We happen to be staying at a local hotel, which sometimes has power and other times not so much. I’m grateful for a bed to sleep in. Showers are interesting with a cold trickle {that’s an understatement} and now part way through the week mine comes out only at the waste high faucet. Its been pretty warm at night so its usually a quick trickle shower and jump in bed. The days are pretty hot as well with all of us in the church and a metal roof. The poverty and amount of children in the village is overwhelming. We have been ending each day with a discussion of poverty with the pastors. Need for jobs, business ideas, and job skills. If you are interested in running a “hand plow” which sounds somewhat like a roto-tiller, you could have a week long-trip right there. Many needs are here so pray that we have wisdom for the long-term solutions. The pastor conference runs through Friday afternoon. The girls finished VBS today and will do ministry to women in the village tomorrow. I think I have about 100 or more pics in drop box giving a pretty good portrayal of the conditions here. Today it felt a great deal like we are making a long-term difference with the Pauline Epistles. I know each of you would love the Uganda people and there is much to do here so please consider.

I slept well last night despite sleeping for 4 hours in the car on the way from Kampala to Gulu yesterday. Unfortunately the rest of the team was up most of the night with jet lag. WHen its this hot and you are this tired, if you sit down in the afternoon it takes about 10 seconds to sleep. The VBS team went to a school today and did bible lessons and songs with the kids. Cynthia, who is a teacher of 5th grade said there were 87 children per classroom!!!! They then held an additional meeting at the Gulu community church that went well also. The kids love to see the white people. ANd yes I could bring home everyone of these little ones as they are so very cute. I taught the first day of the pastors’ conference today unpacking the Pauline cycle for planting churches as well as understanding Eph 4:11 and the relationship between local churches and true biblical parachurches. Many questions were asked and it was a great day. At one point one man asked, “What do we do? We do not have a theological education. How can we lead our churches?” I explained to him that we were giving him the early foundations of one this week. They cheered. It made me feel at home to walk into the church today and here hill songs on the cd player in english. Tomorrow the ladies will run more VBS and I’ll train again. We’ll tackle the gospel, the first principles, and begin work on the Pauline Epistles. I do have one prayer request—I ate the eggs this morning which was apparently a bad idea. So I’ve had some stomach discomfort to say the least. Pray that it goes away in the night. Blessings to you and thank you for praying for us. We discussed at breakfast how God’s strength is really shown in our weakness. I was able to face time Kristen and the kids. One of the people working in our house had to unplug the fridge to do some work and unfortunately forgot to plug it back in so poor Kristen has to deal with that and throw everything out. And of course one of our toilets is needing plunging and the plunging has not been working. If you have the spiritual gift of plunging, please call my wife:)

Our team has bonded well over the course of traveling. Gerda is the oldest of us and a great addition to the team. Great stories of her father being a Dutch soldier in WWII, escaping in a factory explosion after being taken prisoner by the Nazis, and living underground during the war. She was our exerciser on the plane! It has been great to watch Cynthia’s story unfold as the Lord has brought her to the point of coming to Uganda. Now that it is coming to fruition, she is taking it in stride and bringing all her gifts to bear on the journey. She wins the I only slept 1 of 21 hours on the plane award! Kathy of course I know from working with her at CHCC as she is now in the missions dept. there. She has been coming to Gulu since 2008 and as a seasoned mission team leader, truly thinks of everything. With the details taken care of, it makes everyone very relaxed. Today we this morning we met up with Diane Mueller again who has been here for 2 weeks already working with and orphanage. Our big story on Diane is that she has bright pink suitcases, so we have affectionately named her Barbie. Lost my sunglasses along the traveling so I picked up a $4 pair when leaving Kampala—-I think I look a lot like Brad Pitt in them. Okay, maybe more like Pitbull.
